Cashews: The Greatest Nut?

>> 14 December 2008

If there is one thing which we, as Americans tend to take for granted, it's cashews.  While shopping at Costco this week, I purchased a huge tub of cashews.  Let me tell you what - the cashew is a great nut.  Here is a list of nuts, from best to worst*.

  1. Cashew
  2. Pistachio
  3. Almond
  4. Peanut
  5. Hazelnut (known in some places as a "Filbert")
  6. Brazil Nut
  7. Pecan**
  8. Walnut
  9. Raisins***
A few clarifications: *This ranking is based on the tastiness of a roasted, salted, version of the nut.  **The fact that pecan pie is delicious doesn't move pecans up the rankings, because they're not great by themselves.  ***Technically a raisin is not a nut, but I think it still belongs on this list for obvious reasons!  I didn't want anyone to come away from this e-blog post thinking that walnuts were worse than raisins.

What do you think of my list?  Post your own list below.

1. pecan
2. pistachio
3. pine nut
4. walnut
5. cashew
6. macadamia nut
7. hazelnut
8. almond
9. acorn
10. peanut
11. brazil nuts and raisins can't even compare

Pecans are by far the best nut, esp when toasted in sugar and cinny, but they're also munchable plain. I can't believe you left pine nuts off the list!!! Peanuts are the worst nut. They are terrible unless someone majorly spruces them up, like the Reese's people. Also, macadamia nuts are delicio. Acorns are a back up nut: we don't need them now but the time may come when we will be grateful for them.

It's kind of hard to believe that a Mikkelsen would leave sunnies off of this nut list! Yeah, yeah, I know they're called sunflower seeds, but there is no doubt that these babies are nuts. And since you put raisins on your list, it doesn't really matter that they're not called nuts anyway! Can you imagine Mikkelsen salads, Mikkelsen granola or Mikkelsen car trips without sunflower seed? Spit cups aside, sunflower seeds are an important part of Mikkelsen culture. They just have to be high on this list if you are any son of mine. This is a glaring omission that I hope you will rectify in a follow up post.

Nuts That Are Disgusting:
1. Pistachio
2. Pine nut
3. Cashew***
4. Acorn
5. Brazil nuts

*These are all about the same.
**These aren't technically nuts, but they're still pretty good.
***This is the worst nut of all time. Seriously, Joel, I'm not saying that just to be antagonistic because we're in a fierce blog war. Cashews are disgusting.

Joel, I'd have to go with your list hands down. It seems like no one else is making any sense at all. Thank you for being a Nut Expert as well.

1. Peanuts
2. Every other nut
Although cashews are good nuts, they automatically lose points for being a horrible fruit. We were forced to eat some in trinidad and i almost threw up.

also, i totally agree with the statement about pecan pie (which i love)
